Waterford Program Faculty and Students at Enniscorthy

In the summer of 2013, I was part of European Council's Ireland program. We spent 5 weeks in Waterford, Ireland.
I taught a basic art appreciation course called Art in Life. As part of the course, my students were required to create and maintain blogs that documented their time in Ireland.

The Book of Kells

The Book of Kells is an illuminated manuscript that contains all four of the Gospels of the New Testament in Latin. It was created by Celtic monks circa 800, possibly earlier. It is widely regarded as one of Ireland's finest treasures.

The Afronauts

In 1964, after gaining independence, Zambia started a space programme led by Edward Makuka Nkoloso, sole member of the unheard of National Academy of Science, Space Research and Philosophy. The programme, whose aim was to send the first African astronauts to Mars, was soon cancelled, becoming no more than an amusing anecdote in the country’s history. In ‘The Afronauts’ De Middel creates a subjective version of the story engaging with myths and truths.

The now sold-out book is comprised of a series of constructed colour photographs, sequenced alongside drawings and reproductions of letters, resulting in a fictional portrait of a national dream.

Cristina De Middel’s work, nominated for The Deutsche Börse Photography Prize, will be exhibited during PhotoIreland Festival 2013 at The Copper House Gallery.

Curraghmore House and Gardens

Curraghmore House is located in Portlaw, County Waterford. You are not allowed to take pictures of the interior while on the tour, and it is a shame because there are so many treasures located in this house (including huge paintings by Rubens, Gilbert Stuart and many others)

Disneyland - 4.25 Excerpt - An Adventure in Art

Walt Disney begins with quotes from Robert Henri's The Art of Spirit and then explains the importance of an artist's individual style, but also how each member of the team must set aside his personal vision to match the style of the studio production.

The video also shows the processes and products of four Disney artists painting from the same live oak tree. (Marc Davis, Eyvind Earle, Walter Peregoy, and Joshua Meador)

New Irish Works

New Irish Works brings together a selection of 25 Irish and Irish based photographers, underlining the diversity of practices that constitute contemporary Photography in Ireland. The exhibition states and celebrates the emergence of a new wave of artists, and will be accompanied by a dedicated publication. Planned as a multi-city experience, it will be hosted at various locations in Dublin, Limerick, and Cork, including the National Photographic Archive, Ormston House, and others.

The presented artists are: Barry W. Hughes, Cait Fahey, Caroline Mc Nally, Claudi Nir, David Smith, Dorje De Burgh, Dragana Jurisic, Ethna O’Regan, Grainne Quinlan, Ieva Baltaduonyte, Kevin Griffin, Linda Brownlee, Mandy O Neill, Martin Cregg, Maurice Gunning, Miriam O’ Connor, Muireann Brady, Patrick Hogan, Paul Gaffney, Robert Ellis, Roseanne Lynch, Shane Lynam, Shannon Guerrico, Stefania Sapio, and Yvette Monahan.

Launch dates: Limerick 3rd July, Dublin 4th July, and Cork 5th of July.

Tramore. (Irish: Trá Mhór)

Tramore is a short bus ride (13km) from Waterford. Tramore is a seaside town in County Waterford on the southeast coast. It was a small fishing village until the arrival of the railway in 1853. It is now considered a beach resort and tourist destination. It even has a boardwalk with ice cream, carnival-like attractions and surf shops.

Interesting Fact:
On 31 December 1816, the Sea Horse, a military transport ship, with the 2nd battalion of the 59th Regiment of Foot, was wrecked in Tramore Bay, and 292 men and 71 women and children perished. Some time later the Sea Horse was adopted as the symbol of the town of Tramore, and was later adopted as the logo for Waterford Crystal in 1955.

Hook Pennisula and Hook LIghthouse (Oldest operating lighthouse in Ireland)

Hook Lighthouse. The existing tower dates from the twelfth century, though tradition states that Dubhán, a missionary to the Wexford area, established some sort of beacon as early as the fifth century.

Michelagelo's Pietà

Michelangelo carved the Pietà from a single block of marble in 1498. It depicts the Virgin Mary cradling the dead body of Jesus Christ after he was removed from the cross. This sculpture lives in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.

Interesting fact about the Pietà (located in the north aisle) is that it was not always behind bullet-proof glass. It was placed behind the glass as a result of an attack on the sculpture by geologist, Laszlo Tothin, in 1972. It was painstakingly restored form 10 months and then re-opened to the public in 1973.
